POSITION SUMMARY:
Lewis-Gale Medical Center is seeking a Forensic Nurse Coordinator in our Emergency Department. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual looking for professional growth in the field of forensic nursing. The ideal candidate for this role is a seasoned forensic nurse that possesses superb people skills, leadership ability and self-initiative. This position has the potential to expand into a market role in the future.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Manages all direct and indirect nursing care given to the Forensic patients within the Forensic Nursing Program to ensure optimal patient care. Will provide clinical services to patients as needed.
2. Promotes and monitors Forensic Nursing Program safety.
3. Manages Forensic Nursing Program products, supplies and equipment in a cost effective manner.
4. Ensures the Forensic Nursing Program maintains appropriate documentation.
5. Provides clear written and verbal communication to staff, Forensic Nursing personnel, patients and families.
6. Accountable for all phases of staff development including recruitment, orientation, retention, supervision, evaluation, and professional growth.
7. Supervises up to10 FTE
Job Requirements
Education, training, experience:
REQUIREMENTS:
Three years of current experience in Forensic Nursing
Certificate of Completion of a Forensic Nurse Training Program in Adults and Pediatric
Current Virginia State licensure by the State Board of Nursing as a Registered Professional Nurse. BLS
BSN or Bachelor’s Degree in related field
PREFERRED:
Master’s degree, Specialty Certification
Educational programs in nursing management
SANE-A, SANE-P
Special Qualifications – Death Investigation Training, Child and Elder Abuse and Neglect Training, Training in Domestic Violence
FNE SPECIFIC:
A. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner course completion and final certificate of completion within allotted time from an accredited FNE program.
B. Nursing and medical knowledge of forensic equipment and supplies. Two years experience in emergency department or critical care setting required.
C. Special Qualifications: Effective communication skills. Data entry and word processing skills required. Must be able to collect, analyze and process data. Must be able to accurately and efficiently identify, label, collect, preserve, secure and release all types of evidence in accordance with the Virginia Division of Forensic Science regulations. Coloposcopy exams of all age patients. Expert witness testimony, when required in court, regarding assault of any type to any age or gender person.
